As the primacy of the shareholder in twenty-first century capitalism comes under attack, new ideas are appearing about rebalancing the corporation’s purpose.

One unlikely source of inspiration: Eliot Noyes, a mid-century American designer whose beliefs suddenly seem both. Thomas Watson Jr. and Eliot Noyes were pioneers when they set out to craft IBM’s corporate design program in Built on the idea that “good design is good business,” IBM’s design identity endures today as a powerful expression of its character.

The man behind the Selectric typewriter’s elegant lines, Eliot Noyes brought a comprehensive corporate design vision to IBM. Thomas Watson Jr. hired architect and industrial designer Eliot Noyes in to create and lead a Corporate Design Program at IBM as its consultant design director. As a historical document Eliot Noyes provides valuable insights, but as a story, Noyes's life lacked dramatic tension.

A few events, such as the reaction of the New Canaan locals to the modernist homes supply resistance, but Gordon Bruce seems to present Noyes's life as one largely devoid of failure.
